James Mitchell studied to be an illustrator at the Art League in New York. He became a free-lance painter after a summer trip to Nantucket and eventually bought an old cabin cruiser for a studio, which he had towed to Martha's Vineyard. He spent many summers there but currently lives in Noank, Connecticut. Much of his work is in Martha's Vineyard and at the Coast Guard Academy.
